Categories and tags
Open ⋯ → Categories & Tags (on the Mac, Site Actions or the Site menu). Both belong to one site, and both are made here before they can be chosen in a post’s Details. A category is the one broad bucket a post sits in. Tags are the labels you can pile on.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Name | What readers see, for example Field Notes. |
| URL Slug | The address of its archive page. Made from the name if you leave it alone. |
| Description | Optional, categories only. A line about the category. |
Each category and each tag that has posts gets its own archive page on your site, at /categories/… and /tags/…. With A feed for each category and tag on, each also gets its own feed, so a reader can follow only the part of your site they want.
Deleting a category or a tag never deletes posts. The posts simply stop carrying that label, and its archive page comes down at the next publish.
Finding a post
Once a list holds more than ten posts, a filter field appears at its top. Type a word and the list narrows to posts whose title or text contains it. System search finds your posts too, drafts included. See Capture.
Recently Deleted
Deleting a post or page moves it to Recently Deleted for 30 days rather than destroying it, photos and all.
- Restore brings it back exactly as it was.
- Delete Now and Delete All are the only permanent deletes, and both ask first.
Recently Deleted is at the bottom of the posts list whenever something is in it, in the site’s ⋯ menu, and in the Mac’s Site menu. Deleted posts sync to Recently Deleted on your other devices too.
A deleted post comes off your live site at the next publish. A restored post that was published goes back up at the next publish.
A post’s own menu
Touch and hold a post in the list, or right-click it on the Mac, for the things you can do with one post.
Share it
Share sends a post out in one of three forms.
| Form | What you get |
|---|---|
| Markdown | A Markdown file with its title, date, tags and category at the top, and its photos alongside it. Import Markdown reads it back whole. |
| Web Page | One file that holds everything, photos and your theme included. It opens anywhere, with no site around it. |
| The same page laid out a page at a time, on A4 or Letter according to your region. |
On the Mac, Share is also in the composer’s toolbar, and you can drag a post out of the list as a Markdown file.
Copy or move it to another site
Copy to and Move to list your other sites. The post’s photos, category, tags and options go with it, and it gets an address that is free on the other site.
A moved post’s original waits in the first site’s Recently Deleted, so the move can be undone. If the post was published and the site it moved to has an address, the old site’s next publish sends readers from the old address to the new one.
Open it in its own window
On the Mac, Open in New Window gives the post a window to itself.
Bring a post in
Two commands in the ⋯ menu (Site Actions on the Mac) make drafts from things you already have.
- Import Markdown turns a Markdown or plain-text file into a draft, with its title, date, tags and category. Choose its photos along with it to bring them in too. On the Mac you can drop the files on the posts list. Import a site has the details.
- Posts from Photos… makes one post from a set of photos, or a post for each. See Photos, video and audio.
Writing Stats
⋯ → Writing Stats shows your posts and words, and the last twelve months at a glance. It is counted on your device from your published posts. Nothing about your writing is sent anywhere.
